What Are Planetary Hours?

Planetary hours are an ancient astrological system that divides each day into 24 "hours" ruled by the seven classical planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. Unlike modern clock hours, these are "unequal hours" - the period from sunrise to sunset is divided into 12 equal parts (day hours), and sunset to sunrise is divided into 12 equal parts (night hours).

Each planetary hour is believed to carry the specific energy and influence of its ruling planet, making certain times more favorable for specific activities. For example, the Hour of Venus is ideal for matters of love and beauty, while the Hour of Jupiter is excellent for business and legal matters.

Understanding the Chaldean Order

The planetary hours follow the Chaldean Order, an ancient sequence based on the apparent speed of celestial bodies: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. This order repeats throughout the 24-hour period, with the first hour after sunrise always ruled by the planet that governs the day (Sun for Sunday, Moon for Monday, Mars for Tuesday, etc.).

Using Planetary Hours for Timing

Different activities are traditionally associated with each planetary hour:

  • Sun Hour: Leadership, career advancement, success, authority
  • Moon Hour: Intuition, emotions, home matters, psychic work
  • Mars Hour: Courage, conflict resolution, physical challenges
  • Mercury Hour: Communication, contracts, learning, travel
  • Jupiter Hour: Prosperity, legal matters, expansion, wisdom
  • Venus Hour: Love, beauty, art, social gatherings
  • Saturn Hour: Structure, discipline, ancestral work, protection

Planetary hours follow the Chaldean order: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. The system repeats continuously from sunrise each day.  |  Back to Astrology tools
