Crystal lore sits at the intersection of geology, symbolism and intention. I find it genuinely interesting - not as a claim about physical properties, but as a system of correspondences that has accumulated across centuries of use. The database below lets you search by stone, intention or property and see what the tradition says.
Crystal healing and lore draws on a long tradition of associating stones with specific energies, intentions and properties. The correspondences come from multiple sources - ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman lapidary texts, mediaeval European herbalism and alchemy, Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, and more recent New Age synthesis. The result is a rich symbolic vocabulary that varies across traditions but has enough consistent threads to be worth taking seriously as a system, even if you hold the metaphysical claims loosely.
Each stone in the database carries information about its traditional associations: the intentions it is said to support, the chakras it corresponds to, the emotional or spiritual properties attributed to it. I have built the search to work on intention as well as name - so if you are looking for something associated with clarity, or protection, or grief, you can search for the quality rather than needing to know which stone to look for in advance.
I am not going to tell you that crystals work in a physically measurable sense. The evidence for that is not there. What I can say is that working with a symbolic system - choosing a stone for a particular intention, handling it, keeping it somewhere visible - is a form of directed attention. And directed attention is not nothing. Whether the stone itself is doing anything or whether you are simply giving yourself a physical anchor for an intention you already hold, the practical effect can be real. The database is a tool for engaging with the tradition on its own terms, without requiring you to commit to any particular explanation of why it might be useful.
The database currently covers several hundred stones, with entries drawn from multiple traditional sources. I continue to add to it. If there is a stone you cannot find, or a property you think is missing or incorrectly described, the contact page is the right place to flag it. This is a living resource, not a finished one.
The crystal database is free to search, with no account required and no results behind a paywall. Search by stone name, by intention, or browse by property. Every entry includes the traditional associations, chakra correspondences and key properties attributed to the stone.
Suggestions for new entries, corrections, or ideas for new tools - combination guides, grids, intention-based recommendations - are welcome via the contact page.
"A stone is a record of time, pressure and heat. That it carries meaning as well seems almost inevitable."
